Description:
Ma-tt-er is a relational practice focused on building and bridging kinships between ourselves, materials, the immaterial and virtual. It was founded in 2015 by Seetal Solanki in order to readdress our relationship with the planet by understanding what it’s made of.
The Ma-tt-er school in Lagos engages a creative pedagogy to teach city dwellers new ways to repurpose everyday items into useful design objects. The act of discovering materiality and creation creates new pathways towards waste recycling, economic sustainability and therefore alternative futures.
The Ma-tt-er school will take the form of a maker space, plant dye garden and low-tech processing centre for agricultural produce supplied from the lost community garden.
This project is supported by a Breathing Space grant from Pro Helvetia Johannesburg.
